With the UK general election being held on 4th July, the business community is keenly watching Labour's policy directions. Keir Starmer’s frontbench team has begun to outline their plans in crucial areas like energy, infrastructure, planning reform, and public finances. However, with Labour potentially poised to win a swathe of new seats after 14 years in opposition, there is much curiosity about the priorities Labour will adopt if it secures a majority.

Penta has delved into the perspectives of Labour’s Prospective Parliamentary Candidates (PPCs) to shed light on the likely future direction of a Labour government. By analysing their public opinions before the election was declared, we gained a number of crucial insights into their views and the political priorities they are likely to champion if elected.

Unsurprisingly, Labour's class of 2024 are united behind the Party leadership on energy, migration, and relations with business and the City. This marks a stark contrast to the fragmentation seen under Jeremy Corbyn's leadership. Penta’s analysis reveals, however, areas where PPCs diverge from the leadership, particularly on workers' rights and industrial action. As Labour PPCs prepare to potentially take up parliamentary seats, it is likely that these areas of divergence with the Labour leadership will influence what they campaign on in Parliament - and where they are likely to press a Labour Government on.
